Why protect an automatic transfer switch?
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) surge protection is critical for the operation of the switch. The modern ATS has circuit boards, electronic controls, relays and sensors that are sensitive to transients. Transient damage to an ATS switch and/or controller can result in failure of the ATS to perform during an electrical crisis. Cumulative damage level transients can cause minor problems in the programming or logic controls for the switch resulting in the false operation of the transfer switch and operation of the generator when no problem exists, or the failure to make the transfer in the event of an actual crisis. Catastrophic damage can destroy the switch and/or controller and take the entire system off-line.
There are four main sources of potential transient damage that can impact an ATS. The first, and most common, is the utility power line. Lightning, generator switching at the utility power station or sub-station, capacitor bank switching on the grid, or nearby facilities producing their own large transients can cause catastrophic as well as cumulative level transients at the ATS. A properly installed Surge Protective Device (SPD) at the power utility line side of the ATS can prevent the damage from this source.
The second source of transients is the generator, or back-up power source line. The quality of the power produced by a back-up generator is dependent on many factors. The age of the generator and motor, the quality and frequency of the maintenance performed on the motor and generator, the load to capacity ratio of the generator, how frequently the generator is run and for how long, the quality and maintenance of the connections from the generator to the ATS, and more all have an impact on the ability of the generator to provide clean quality power to the electrical system during a power utility outage. Problems in any of these areas can result in the generator producing transients with the capability of causing everything from a minor nuisance to catastrophic failure. A properly installed SPD at the generator load side of the ATS can prevent the damage from this source.
The third source of transients is the down line electrical system. Internally generated transients can travel back up line to the ATS and cause cumulative as well as catastrophic damage to the switch and controller. A properly installed SPD at the load side line of the ATS can prevent the damage from this source.
The last source of transients is the actual physical switch within the ATS itself. The blades that switch from the power utility line input to the generator line input will cause arcing and transients when they disconnect from one and make contact with the other. A properly installed SPD at the blades of the ATS can prevent the damage from this source.

If you are installing a stand by generator in order to have some electrical power to your home in the event of a utility power outage, it is important that you understand how to properly install a transfer switch.


The transfer switch is the device that transfers the power from the utilities power to the standby generators power, as shown in Figure1.
Very few homeowners can afford or consider it necessary to supply power to all of the homes electrical devices, fixtures and appliances in the event of a power failure. Because the generator chosen can only supply power to a limited number of items, it is necessary to decide which circuits will be powered by the standby generator in theThere are two methods to perform the transfer:

Manual

Automatic
In each case, manual or automatic transfer the circuitry is the same. In the case of the manual transfer switch, it requires that someone recognizes that the utility power has failed and must intervene to start the generator and then transfer the desired circuits to the generators power output. A manual transfer switch does not operate if there is no one at home.
In the case of an automatic transfer switch (ATS), the switch has the intelligence to sense when the utility is no longer delivering power and automatically starting the generator and then transferring the circuits to the generator. The automatic transfer switch also recognizes when the utility power is back online, transfers the circuits back to the utility and turns the generator off.
A basic home electrical service looks like this (grounding circuits and wires have been left out in order to make the drawings less cluttered):
The meter is fed from the utility via an overhead or underground conduit as shown in Figure 2. The electrical service main disconnect and electrical distribution panel are shown as 2 separate items, however newer circuit breaker distribution panels have the main disconnect located at the top of the electrical distribution panel (large circuit breaker).

Why do I need a Transfer Switch?

A generator transfer switch is needed for individuals who wish to use an electric generator as a source of backup power for a home or business.
The automatic transfer switch will switch the power source from the commercial power supply company to the onsite generator. These switches make it possible to limit the electricity from the electric company to be used only when the switch is in the proper position.
Automatic Transfer switches are the only recognized safe alternative for connecting an electrical load to the generator for an entire house or business. Putting an electric generator into the system without any kind of switch limiting its use could prove to be disastrous to the generator itself and to everything that is powered by it.
